Collection Fléchette

‘Collection Fléchette’ is a growing series of pocket books initatated by sun/sun éditions and the Musée Albert-Kahn in France. Every book invites a contemporary author to select one image out of the ‘The Archives of the Planet’ as ‘point de depart’ for a piece of literature.

The Archives of the Planet was a project undertaken by Albert Kahn from 1908 to 1931, and aimed to photograph human cultures around the world resulting in 183,000 meters of film and 72,000 color photographs from 50 countries.

The myth tells that Albert-Kahn would throw a dart (‘Fléchette’ in french) into the worldmap sending one of his photographers to this place to make an image on the revolutionery autochrome format. True to the name of this collection our design remais typical and we proposed to add with every new publication a new dart hole in the cover of the book. The covers will have a growing collection of ‘peepholes’ allowing to preview a 1:1 reproduction of the selected autochrome present just behind the cover, making a secondary reference to pinhole photography. We need a closed surface and a hole to represent the world.
